Another movie for Reese’s fans. Not much trouble on the brain still a nice entertainer. The male lead does not eat into her light and I loved that. We get to see Reese playing the role of a social minded doctor who never finds love till she goes into coma! That’s right, and that’s when she falls in love. Hollywood now seems to be filled with the idea that a person in coma has a spirit wandering around. The scene where the hero tries to get her to believe that she is a spirit and she walks right into a table was good…just a pinch of the unexpected. The rest of the movie is fairy tale romance material. When you think maybe the romance in your life is dead and gone do think of this movie.

Preview:
Blogger Gabbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02042026567635255834noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2472264009160060419.post-1682922745820206792007-08-24T17:14:00.001+05:302008-12-09T03:18:00.743+05:30Brokeback Mountain
Director: Ang Lee

Cast: Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Randy Quaid, Valerie Planche

Genre: Romance, Drama

Rating: R

Release Date: 16 December, 2005

Editor’s Review:
Let me tell you right away I liked the movie. It starts of slowly enough and is quite slow paced throughout infact. The audience is kept in its seat by the intrigue of how the drama would pan out. The drama is one of emotions. Is love all important? Is family worth all the sacrifices we make for it? These I think are the questions tackled here. The dilemma presented could well have been that of a man and a woman or even of two women, the drama would have been the same. A movie very in touch with the conundrums of reality. I liked it when the two were trying to make space for themselves within the bounds of marriage and society. Our society does have a very limited view of love. The telephone conversation between Jack’s (Jake Gyllenhall) wife and Ennis(Heath Ledger) where she gives him the spiel about the cause of Jack’s death with Ennis hearing exactly what could have actually happened is a nice touch. It shows exactly how society dealt with the kind of love it dint understand a couple of decades ago.

Preview:
Blogger Gabbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02042026567635255834noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2472264009160060419.post-59354480649981379852007-08-24T17:06:00.000+05:302008-12-09T03:18:01.181+05:30The Skeleton Key
Director: Lain Softley

Cast: Kate Hudson, Gena Rowlands, John Hurt

Genre: Horror, Thriller, Mystery

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: 12 August, 2005

Editor’s Review:

I gave this movie the time of day only for kate’s sake. Its touted as a scary movie. To me it seemed more like something a lady can read in the afternoon over a cup of tea. Thrills, scares, ghosts all so in moderation and in such non dramatic fashion that you can leave it without even a thought. The house where the non action takes place has the nice colonial touch that the movie requires. Hudson looks as angelic as ever. The end was intriguing. The director seems not very sure if the movie should be an out and out superstition based thriller or a psychological one. He tries a Manoj N. Shyamalan I think, in whose movies the idea presented to the audience causes the fear and he builds the tension till almost the end where everything is revealed well with great closure. The director of Skeleton key succeeds in the building of the denouement but the actual ending seems such an anti-climax. After having used reason throughout the movie he insults the audience with the end. Fine enough viewing though.

Preview:
Blogger Gabbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02042026567635255834noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2472264009160060419.post-28686443274662198372007-08-17T01:40:00.000+05:302008-12-09T03:18:01.427+05:30Rush Hour 3

Director: Brett Ratner

Cast: Jackie Chan, Chris Tucker

Genre: Action/Comedy

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: 10 August, 2007

Editor's Review:

(Sorry! our editor is on a surprise vacation, we're inviting our readers to review this movie, the best review will be displayed here! This movie gave this to me. I couldn’t think of one way I could have made the movie better. This kind of analysis is not arrogance but every movie buff’s right. The movies logic has no loopholes. The best actors have been chosen. Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum are the best to have played the roles. The chemistry between these two and the relation they have with the aliens is very natural. Usually in a alien movie the aliens are either very friendly with cute faces or villains with monstrous ones. The effort is definitely worth it. I don’t know how I would classify the movie. Its subject I find is adult enough. Would children wonder at a baby crawling through roads under juggernauts and riding on cranes? They would probably think this was fun and not fantasy. The fear and the thrill are for the adults. The oo’s and aah’s that the movie causes is also for the adults. The scene where the baby crosses the road to go to the zoo and the scene at the construction sites keeps us clenching our teeth. So if you have been avoiding this movie coz its infantile or childish change that opinion. Happy viewing.

Preview:
Blogger Gabbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02042026567635255834noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2472264009160060419.post-60990806909534265112007-08-13T12:30:00.000+05:302008-12-09T03:18:02.141+05:30Ocean's Thirteen

Director: Steven Soderbergh

Cast: George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Daemon, Al Pacino

Genre: Action/Adventure/Crime/Comedy

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: 8 June, 2007

Editor's Review:
If you think you know your ocean’s series after the first and second parts think again. This movie does not want to fit the description. The idea was probably to make an “its different” movie. You could say they succeeded to a certain extent. The sets were very impressive. I actually believed I was seeing a part of Las Vegas till I saw "the making of the movie" and was told that the whole casino was the imagination of a brilliant art director. This part of the series is filled with dialogues and if you miss out on one of them then you either miss an important scheme or miss out on a joke that was cracked. This is the kind of movie I would rather sit in the comfort of my home and watch. I would definitely miss the grandeur of the sets but when it comes down to movies, I am in, more for the entertainment rather than the sets or costumes. Don’t get me wrong I do know they add to the movie but they are not the movie. If I were to sit at home with a bowl of popcorn and watch Ocean’s 13 then this movie would definitely rank as a favorite right after X-files and CSI. It’s really gripping and can very easily keep ones interest. The larger than life casino and the larger than life plot that they come up with are intriguing. Nothing is ordinary in the movie, from the drills used(leading to some very vulgar humour) to the necklaces. I hadn’t even heard of a 5-diamond rating for a hotel!!! The plan for the heist is complex. This time it involves complex machinery and the group has invested all their money into this one big getting-back-at-you-“Willy Bank”(Al Pacino) idea. Matt Damon is made to romance a lady who looks too old for him. The small Asian guy chooses to demonstrate the uses of CG. Brad Pitt and Clooney did not even bother to leave a mark. Pacino is his flamboyant self, as should a casino owner be and when he is brought down I actually felt sorry for him. Despite all efforts I believe O13 is a better TV movie than a big screen one, except for the grandeur of the sets.

Preview:(for better results on slower connections, pause the video for some time before viewing)

Blogger Gabbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02042026567635255834noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2472264009160060419.post-34946235196503453972007-08-13T00:00:00.000+05:302008-12-09T03:18:02.292+05:30Bruce Almighty
Director: Tom Shadyac

Cast: Jim Carrey, Morgan Freeman, Jeniffer Aniston

Genre: Comedy/Fantasy

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: 23 May, 2003

Editor's Review:
I have always found jim carey a little too loud like our "Goundamani". This movie changed that. I had read reviews telling me that jim was a good actor and this movie proved it. This is a story about a failed TV weather man who discovers love and in the process God. Like most men who think that success and love is about quantities, jim too starts off trying to get the best stories for his channel and gifts for his lady love. In typical movie style he realizes that whatever he did seemed to fall short. God has had it with his complaints and makes jim god for a week. Jim really thinks that the job is easy. He starts granting wishes all around. The scene where he sorts out prayers and wonders how do to it is interesting. He even pulls the moon a little closer to impress Jennifer. Naturally all his actions have consequences and he realizes that life and love is not all about achievements but more about giving and caring. The movie sees jim performing without too much of his usual antics and touches the heart. The reformation of man…always a good theme.

Preview: (for better results on slower connections, pause the video for some time before viewing)

Blogger Gabbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02042026567635255834noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2472264009160060419.post-45192157921180986012007-08-12T00:00:00.002+05:302008-12-09T03:18:02.448+05:30Riding in cars with boys
Director: Penny Marshal

Cast: Drew Barrymore, Steve Zahn, Adam Garcia, Brittany Murphy, James Woods, Lorraine Bracco

Genre: Drama/Biography/Comedy

Rating: PG-13

Relase Date: 19 October, 2001

Editor's Review:
A teenage girl with a bastard child – a drug and alcohol prone lover – overbearing parents – lost chance of a good education… Material worthy of a good melodrama and few tears you would say….at least that’s what a whole life’s worth of typical masala kollywood prepared me for.

The movie impressed me by its ordinariness. It has sufficient and more material to preach and philosophize about but the makers don’t go there.

The character played by Drew is a girl, woman and mother with flaws. She is a troubled teen who believes her parents don’t love her enough and so gets pregnant, as a wife she does not care for her home or husband and as a mother she does not care for her son. No judgments are made about these lacks. Instead we find characters actually pandering to her. Even when confronted with her shortcomings she is rather bewildered than sorry. She has her moments when she tries to rehabilitate her husband and when she decides to take care of her son. The scene where she promises to look after Jason, is in all its melodrama still funny. This is why I love this movie.

The men in the movie are atypical too. The man of the house is a drug/alcohol-crazed moron. His saving grace, he loves his woman. He loves her so much that he actually comes up with a cockamamie theory that he needed just the right amount of drugs to keep him steady and if he got it, he could continue to be the good father/husband he is. When the lady refuses there are no shouting matches. Just a matter of fact acceptance of his predicament and he leaves with a tooth of his son as memory.

The son is another male character that impressed me. He has accepted the fact that his mother needs him and he does not worry too much about it. He did it when he was 10 or so and continued to do it when he was 20 and college was waiting for him. When it was time to choose he chooses his mother over a loving girlfriend.

I usually like to categorize movies as pro women or anti them. This one left me confused. Drew’s character was not the kind of lead woman you would find being portrayed in a movie. She did not care for anybody but herself. There is a slow realization and she learns to be responsible. For the first time a woman is shown as not a born good wife, not a congenital mother but as a person who learns being both. This is the real woman. The men too surprised me. I love to bitch about the men in movies. The men in this movie were different. One was willing to give up everything in his own way for the love of his life. Another willingly takes up responsibility of a woman who is traditionally supposed to take care of him. I am yet to see one like these in real life. The possibility of his existing that this movie shows, gives me immense pleasure.

Preview:(for better results on slower connections, pause the video before viewing)

Blogger Gabbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02042026567635255834noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2472264009160060419.post-73884448767533166222007-08-12T00:00:00.001+05:302008-12-09T03:18:02.750+05:30Sweet Home Alabama

Director: Andy Tennant

Cast: Reese Witherspoon, Josh Lucas, Patrick Dempsey

Genre: Romance/Comedy/Drama

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: 27 September, 2002

Editor's Review:

Another romantic movie to warm the cockles of your heart. Resse as the small town girl turned into a fashion icon does her part really well, the required amount of bitchiness. That’s the word that comes up when I think of the world of fashion and if you are a really discerning reader you would realize how convincing Reese was to have me make the association. I love Reese in whatever she does …I am very biased that way so don’t take my word for it, just see the movie. Another argument to see the movie is the character played by Rudd. If there has been a stereotypical presentation of a husband who tries to make his marriage work with even a - I’m really sorry folks – bitch like Reese then Rudd fits in perfectly. For me though it was a first. I gobbled up shamelessly the hate-love emotions between the two. This is coz it gives hope to everywoman to be the b**** she wants to be…and yet can rest assured that her man will want her. All women do want a strong alpha male sometimes. Ofcourse as usual there is the mandatory gay friend, the other guy to claim the woman’s love and a conniving villain who tries to separate them and ends up making the perfect match instead. The same old story I understand but done well…to use an old word, the movie is nice.

Preview:(for better results on slower connections, pause the video for some time before viewing)
Blogger Gabbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02042026567635255834noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2472264009160060419.post-89041555767240570982007-08-12T00:00:00.000+05:302008-12-09T03:18:02.920+05:30The Truth About Cats and Dogs
Director: Micheal Lehmann

Cast: Uma Thurman, Janeane Garofolo, Ben Chaplin, Jamie Foxx

Genre: Romance/Comedy

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: 26 April, 1996

Editor's Review:
If this movie was successful its coz even the most beautiful woman is full of self doubts. Women are the most insecure creatures when it comes to their looks. She could be sporting the best brands of dress and accessories and still feel lacking. The movie is about a radio vet/consultant who discovers true love and in the process overcomes her insecurities about her looks. Love can do it everytime. Wish every woman can find the kind of love that makes her feel beautiful in every sense. Feminists would like women to believe that a man in her life is not necessary to make her feel good. Mebbe true, but science, physiology, biology and all else tells her she needs a man and the best would be one who can make her feel beautiful even in rags.
After all that digression let me tell you about the movie. The vet in all her insecurities gets her best friend to date the man she loves-but-is-scared-to-tell. The man in question has spoken to the vet through her radio shows (a la Munna bhai style). He likes her sense of humour and her love for animals and is attracted to her because of these qualities. The vet limited by popular definition of beauty cannot bring herself to understand his love for her. So when the man asks for a meeting she sends her friend a classic beauty by all definitions. The man in true fairy tale love story style realizes that the lady with him seems to lack the fire of the woman he has spoken to in the radio shows. How things turn out after this makes the story. The movie is not special in any way. It just appeals to the romantic dreams of most women.

Preview:(for better results on slower connections, pause the video for some time before viewing)

Blogger Gabbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02042026567635255834noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2472264009160060419.post-87497499240393285242007-08-11T12:00:00.000+05:302008-12-09T03:18:03.203+05:30Ghost

Director: Jerry Zucker

Cast: Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, Whoopi Goldberg

Genre: Romance/Comedy/Drama/Mystery

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: 13 July, 1990

Editor's Review:

This is one movie that really appeals to all that is romantic in me. The famous intimate scene between the leading pair where they make pottery seem such a romantic thing for a couple to do together always drives me where it has to. Some movies are so well made that despite their inherent illogic we are willing to suspend disbelief and get in the mood of it and enjoy it. This movie is one such. The romanticism of a lover coming back from the dead coz of the strong love connection is every man/woman’s fantasy I suppose. This movie gives us a taste of how things would be. The part where Moore dances with a dead Swayze through Whoopi might have been funny if it wasn’t very romantic. We also see the presence of good and evil. The representation of both was ofcourse definitely cliché what with the black runny things coming up from somewhere down below and taking away the evil man. Swayze goes off into the light before which he metamorphoses into an ethereal glowing self. All funny if we were to analyse it…but if you are a true romantic don’t do it and you will have the pleasure of having watched one of the best romantic movies made by Hollywood.

Preview:(for better results on slower connections, pause the video for some time before viewing)
Blogger Gabbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02042026567635255834noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2472264009160060419.post-2597588526512709242007-08-11T01:00:00.000+05:302008-12-09T03:18:03.355+05:30Silence of the LambsDirector: Jonathan Demme

Cast: Jodie Foster, Anthony Hopkins, Ted Levine

Genre: Thriller/Crime

Rating: R

Release Date: 14 February, 1991

Editor's Review:

Clareese…the way Lecter says it sends a chill through my body everytime I see the movie. This is a whodunit with a criminal assisting the police through direction. Lecter is not scary in this movie. Perhaps it’s the ordinariness which is supposed to scare. That’s not what impressed me about the movie. What I did like were the encounters between him and Starling(Foster). He plays her so well and she does his bidding. The way he mesmerizes her is the scary part. He makes her tell her stories about herself in exchange for tidbits about Buffalo Bill(BB), the villain of the piece. With Lecter’s character present in the movie BB seems more like a man gone mad rather than a vicious killer. They do show his doing some antics but that wasn’t scary cause at the back of my mind I always felt he was the byline and what was happening between L and D was the story. The scene where Starling finds the girl and confronts the villain is thrilling. The part where he reaches out for her in the dark when he is just inches away from her always makes me hold my breath. Another favourite scene of mine is when Lecter is trying to escape. If you notice carefully the background music is classical. That was an interesting combination – violent action with classical music. This is a movie that one can savor for a long time after the event.

Preview:(for better results on slower connections, pause the video for some time before viewing)
Blogger Gabbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02042026567635255834noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2472264009160060419.post-67350607356744336192007-08-11T00:31:00.000+05:302008-12-09T03:18:03.504+05:30The Sound of Music

Director: Robert Wise

Cast: Julia Andrews, Christopher Plummer

Genre: Musical/Family/Drama

Rating: G

Release Date: 29 March, 1965

Editor's Review:
I first heard of the movie when I was perhaps 8 or 9 years old, but I had to wait almost 15 years or more to see it. I still remember how that happened. STAR movies, a local cable channel was playing it at around 3p.m. I was then doing my masters and had to cut lectures to see the movie. Believe it or not that was the first time ever that I actually bunked class. I ran home to see my movie and to this day I think it was worth the effort. If there are people who still believe in fairy tales then this is the movie version. Snow white, Cindrella et al are meant for books Sound of Music is celluloid magic. The very first scene where the camera shows us the Austrian hills was the among the first such shots that I had seen and it was breathtaking. The songs of the movie were already familiar having learnt them at school and seeing the original was like coming home. I have seen quite a few musicals, however, I believe if I was to name the best of them all then it would definitely be this movie. I was trying yoddling even when I dint know what it meant. Everybody should see this movie atleast once.

Preview:(for better results on slower connections, pause the video for some time before viewing)
Blogger Gabbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02042026567635255834noreply@blogger.com0
